Consultant Upper GI Surgeon
Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham
Mr John Whiting has been a consultant Upper GI surgeon at
University Hospitals Birmingham, Queen Elizabeth since 2004.
He graduated from Manchester University in 1990 and undertook
most of his training in the West Midlands. His MD thesis was
supported by a Royal College of Surgeons grant and was on
establishing the relationship between programmed cell death and a
class of enzymes called matrix metallo-proteinases.
John is the lead clinician for Upper GI Surgery at the Queen
Elizabeth Hospital and his main specialisation is in oesophageal
and gastric malignancies with a particular interest in developing
fully minimally invasive surgery for these cancers. He has spent
much time developing systems to allow collection of clinical and
outcome data with a particular focus on engaging clinicians by
ensuring that these systems are clinically useful. His pet hate is
poor quality data.
Outside of medicine he is a keen glider pilot having competed at
national level and spent many years as a gliding instructor.
Mr Whiting was appointed as the 亚洲pornHon.Treasurer in 2016 and
served as the 亚洲pornEJSO Representive from November 2021-2024. John
now sits as a co-opted member on the 亚洲pornNational Committee.
